Private Label Cosmetics Boost Sales

By Andrea Davidson

Private label is most often associated with discount grocery items. However, more recently, the category has been expanding into new territory, such as private label cosmetics. Carrying this type of product gives retailers a good way to differentiate from the crowd. Furthermore, this type of product is quite easy to market as it offers benefits for both the seller and the customer.

Manufactures that make private label products sell them to other companies to be sold to consumers using their own name as the brand. Sometimes companies choose to use the store brand for their products, but they will often make up a name they feel will attract consumers. This concept has been around for some time, although most associate private label with cheaper grocery staples. While offering store brand groceries is a good way to attract sales from consumers looking to save costs, some of the newer categories seek to offer consumers an exclusive product.

As both manufacturers and retailers seek ways to gain share of the shrinking consumer wallet, private labeling has become a way to stand out from the competition. The channel now encompasses many new categories, such as cosmetics. These customized cosmetics are purchased from the manufacturer and branded with the retailer's desired name, making customers feel they are buying an exclusive product.

Many establishments could benefit from selling their own line of makeup, such as hair salons and other beauty related services, or even small boutiques. It is a great way to increase consumers' overall spend per visit and to gain repeat sales. Private label cosmetics offer benefits for both the seller and the customer.

For the seller, increasing the dollar amount each customer spends per visit would be one benefit. For instance, a new customized makeup routine would be the perfect add on for a customer who is having their hair colored. For small boutiques, selling a unique line of makeup in addition to their other jewelry and accessory collections would be a great way to boost sales.

For consumers, the biggest benefit is the opportunity to purchase such products from an already known and trusted establishment. While consumers may like the notion of buying an exclusive product, they may have reservations over what to buy or the best place to buy it. Because of this, they are more likely to trust a brand name they are familiar with.

Marketing cosmetics is fairly simple. For those already in the beauty industry, the customer base is built in. By creating an eye-catching display, the seller is sure to generate interest from potential customers that will likely lead to increased sales. Offering a free makeover with the purchase of another service is another great way to introduce customers to the new product line.

Seek ways to increase consumer spending has become important to both retailers and service providers, and offering a line of private label cosmetics may be just the way to do that. Businesses can stand out from the competition by offering products that can't be purchased anywhere else. Customers will be thrilled at the idea of buying something new from an already trusted source, and sellers will be able to increase sales and generate repeat business.
