Before Undergoing Breast Augmentation California Patients Should Know This Information

By Judy Sullivan

Every year, many women who are not satisfied with the size or shape of their bust-lines undergo breast augmentation surgery for a more shapely and well-proportioned look. Before deciding to have breast augmentation California patients need to make sure they have all the facts about this procedure in order to make an informed decision.

It is essential to find a skilled cosmetic surgeon to perform this procedure. The doctor should not only be board-certifed, have excellent credentials, and years of experience, but he or she should also have a good rapport with the patient, answer her questions, and make her feel at ease. After a doctor has been chosen, it will be necessary to arrange a consultation.

The cosmetic surgeon will determine what the ideal cup size is and type of implant is most suitable based on the anatomy and health of the patient and what her expectations are. The doctor will use his or her expertise to choose the best approach for each patient that is likely to produce the safest and best results.

There are several ways in which this procedure can be done. Implants are the most common method, and these come in silicone, which are pre-filled with a flexible gel and available in various shapes, cohesive gel silicone, which has a firmer substance inside than regular silicone implants, and saline implants which contain a sterile salt-water solution and are able to be filled to different sizes. Autologous fat transfer is another technique that involves liposuctioning fat from other body areas and injecting it into the breasts.

This procedure involves making an incision in the armpit, underneath the breasts, or on the edge of the areola, through which the implant is placed under the breast tissue or chest muscle tissue. Some surgeons believe it entails fewer risks to place the implants under the chest muscle tissue, since placing these forms under the breast tissue can sometimes affect mammogram results or cause a condition known as "capsular contracture" in which the tissue around the implants hardens.

Under normal circumstances, this procedure is performed on an out-patient basis and does not require an overnight stay unless there are complications. It typically takes 1 or 2 hours to complete and general anesthesia is used. After surgery, the incisions on the breasts will be covered with gauze and an elastic bandage, or in some cases a special type of bra. In 7 to 10 days the stitches will be removed.

Swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the area is to be expected for several days to weeks after the operation. Discomfort can be controlled with pain medications usually. Strenuous activities should be avoided and a supportive bra should be worn to speed up healing. The scars should not be very noticeable as most surgeons aim to minimize their visibility.

Following breast augmentation California patients can normally enjoy the results for many years, but inevitably the procedure will need to be done over at some point, and in the event a leak occurs, even though this is uncommon, it will need immediate attention. Fat transfers can also lose volume and need to be redone. Pregnancy, weight gain or loss, and aging can all affect the results, but even still, it will likely last a long time.
