How To Use Sunless Tanning Products

By Haywood Hunter

As the name indicates, sunless tanning products are chemicals utilized for darkening skins. They appear in different kinds such as dyes, body oils, lotions, and creams. They have a distinctive brown color, which is the final color attained after use. The costs and sizes vary for purposes of convenience. This article highlights some facts on sunless tanning products.

Sun tanning products do not involve the use of either artificial or natural UV radiations. This is the reason why they are referred to as sunless. UV radiations are harmful if one is exposed to them for a long time. They may cause suppressed body immunity, cataracts, wrinkles, and cancer of the skin. These adverse effects were the major push for development of sunless tanning products so that people can tan their skins safely.

All sunless tanning products affect the color of the skins from the upper-most layer called the horny or corneum layer. The horny layer has dead cells which are composed of amino acids. DHA, the short form for Dihydroxyacetone is the most active ingredient contained in almost all sunless tanning products. It undergoes a reaction with amino acids in the horny layer. These interactions take up to 1 hour and once they are completed, the resultant skins are properly tanned.

As the reaction between DHA and amino acid proceeds, there may be emission of a characteristic smell. It however fades away as the reaction goes to completion. Some manufacturers add perfumes into the products to prevent them from smelling. This is a bright idea as the perfumes enhance the smell of the skin and make the sunless tanning products to serve two different purposes.

The tanning activity differs among people. Some tan more quickly with less effort whereas others take time. Because of this, producers vary the strength or concentration of sunless tanning products to suit the different kinds of people. Factors that dictate how individuals tan consist of their the skin type, genetic makeup, and skin tone or color. There are lotions that incorporate body oils in their formulars to suit individuals with skins that are dry.

In order to avoid wastage and/or to improve the results it is recommendable to prepare the skin surface before applying sunless tanning products. Skin preparation entails bronzing, scrubbing, and moisturizing. When applied efficiently on clean skin, sunless tanning products cause a tan that stays for around 3-5 days. One could apply the tanners once after 3 days or sooner depending on personal preferences.

Sunless tanning products appear in two classes, those for internal use and those for external use. Those meant for external application should not be consumed. Tanning pills are the major commodities intended for internal use. However, pills are never approved by many medical bodies since they cause failure in vital organs. They must therefore be avoided.

Sunless tanning products are bought from drug stores and medical facilities. They are cheap and due to technological enhancement and increased research, they produce more realistic and predictable results. Check out company websites and forums for more information about them before making a purchase.
