By Coleen Torres

Breast augmentation is considered by a number of women for various reasons. The reasons vary from cosmetic to medical and normally are dependent on the underlying needs that need to be addressed. In consideration of breast augmentation Anchorage women have a number of options. The biggest reason for this procedure is for the enlargement of breasts. If anything, this is what the procedure does. Some women with small breasts are self conscious and seek to look more feminine by considering enlargement.

Breasts are very instrumental when it comes to achievement of proportionality of the bodies of women. Thus most of the time when the body of a woman is not proportional, she will go for breast enlargement to correct that. Their self esteem and physical appearance is improved as a result. Breast changes after pregnancy also raise the need for augmentation but this is done for restoration purposes rather than enlargement.

The healing process after breast cancer treatment is facilitated in a great way by augmentation. Women affected will get to regain part of their lives they may have lost during their treatment. After the mastectomy process, most women feel incomplete and therefore reconstruction of their breasts is an important part of the process of recovery. This procedure is recommended for most women after breast cancer treatment.

The presence of asymmetrical breasts is yet another driving factor for some ladies. This is whereby one breast is larger than the other. Augmentation will therefore give balance to the breasts and make them achieve a level of symmetry. This also improves self esteem of those involved. No matter the reason one has for taking up the procedure, it should be done as a personal choice and not because of opinion from other people.

Thorough preparation for surgery will be required. The surgeon provides preoperative instructions and answers any questions the patients may have. Also important will be the medical history of the individual and a physical exam to determine how fit they are for the surgery. It is also important to track any changes in breast tissues. This is done through a mammogram before the surgery and another some months after the surgery.

Certain precautions are taken during the period preceding surgery. People who smoke will be required to keep off smoking six weeks in advance as this is likely to hinder the process of healing. Also, one will not be required to take either aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory drugs as these are known to increase bleeding. It is also very important to remain hydrated both before and after the surgery. This enhances safe recovery.

In the case of augmentation that is done using autologous transfer of fat, one may be required to wear special bra. This serves to help in expansion of the skin and tissues around breasts to make them ready for injection of fats. The entire procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients should make arrangements on how to get home on the day of surgery.

Risks and limitations of the procedure are uncommon. Just like any surgical option, such risks as allergic reactions, scarring and damage to underlying tissues are expected. Complications are however almost unheard of if it is done professionally.
