Why Switching To A Straight-edge Razor Makes Sense

By Linda Parker

Learning to use a straight razor is time consuming and not meant for the undedicated. And at first glance, shaving using a straight-edge razor appears dangerous. But while an unprotected razor blade is certainly lethal, there are many benefits of wet-shaving as compared to using modern alternatives.

People who've switched to straight razors report that they offer a far much better shave. Thanks to the standalone blade, one gains a huge degree of freedom. You're free to turn the knob to increase or reduce the aggressiveness of the shave as you please. Additionally, there's nothing to inhibit you from increasing or reduce the angle. The result is that you have a much better ability to control the shaving process.

Straight blades are sharpened to a polish level that by far surpasses that of conventional blades. This gives them a far better cutting ability. Because the blade shaves by actually cutting hair strands instead of pulling them out, the resulting shave is devoid of irritation. You only need to run the blade against skin fewer times, which means you're less likely to cut yourself. This feature would be of great benefit to people who frequently get burns and rashes with conventional blades.

Modern multi-blade razors work via a process known as hysteresis. The first blade pulls out hair, while the subsequent ones cut. Because hair follicles are constantly forced to retract and emerge from skin repeatedly, there's no guarantee that the blade follows the same path. This results in high susceptibility to in-grown hair. Switching to a straight blade would lessen the occurrence of such painful annoyances.

Switching to a straight blade offers cost-saving benefits. In fact, you'll only need to buy the blade and a few other tools used to maintain it. Because most of them are only purchased once, you'll spend less than you would on modern alternatives. The quality of modern blades doesn't even go in line with their exorbitant prices.

Shaving with vintage blades has minimal ecological impact. Not only does their manufacturing process involve lesser emissions, but there's also no landfill garbage or shaving products filled with CFCs. When one is done using an old straight razor, they can package it appropriately and sent to a recycling plant.

The open blade shave offers unrivaled luxury and craftsmanship. From the warm lather on your face to the smooth, irritation-free cut, you cannot find a better shave. And because much of the grinding, forging and assembly is done by hand, lots of craftsmanship go into making the blade. The satisfaction that comes with a clean shave, coupled with these factors, means that one soon starts looking forward to shaving.

Take the brave step and switch to open-blade shaving. While you'll need to take time to learn how to shave properly, the artisan technique is arguably much better than what any modern shaving option can offer. You'll not only be able to shave cleanly and efficiently, but also not have to dread any side effects.
