All About Sun Tanning Lotion

By Haywood Hunter

There are many people who end up confused over sunblocks and sun tanning lotion. Many have a hard time pointing out in which aspects the two are different. Sunblocks are actually formulated to reflect UVA and UVB rays and protect the skin surface. A sun tanning lotion, however, is created with ingredients that harness sunlight rays and enhance the process of skin darkening.

All types of sun tanning lotion contain more or less the same ingredients. When people try to strengthen their skin colors, what they are doing is actually manipulating the melanin in their skin. Melanin refers to the protein which causes skin darkening when exposed to UV rays from the sun. It is actually there for skin protection but a lot of people choose to manipulate this for beauty.

Many people make use of sun tanning lotion to enhance the ability of their melanin and ultimately darken their skin. One ingredient which helps make this possible is an amino acid known as tyrosine. It naturally occurs within the body and helps build melanin. Nonetheless, many people prefer the more topical of use of melanin so tans are developed quicker and even darker.

A common misconception people have with sun tanning lotion revolves around skin protection. Many think that lotions are able to protect as much as sunblocks do. However, the contrary actually happens. Sun tanning lotion makes skin a lot more sensitive to light and this increases risks to skin damage. Many lotions come with moisturizers that help prevent extreme damages though but some are often not good enough to prevent future skin complications like skin cancer.

There are some sun tanning lotion that come with SPF. This can also help protect users from suffering skin damages brought about by UV rays. The higher SPF level a sun tanning lotion has, the greater protection it can offer. Using lotions is considered much better as compared to not putting on any.

Other people prefer getting lotions that have DHA among the active ingredients. DHA is one ingredient that helps in oxidizing the skin. It gives skin surfaces the bronze appearance even without sunlight. A sun tanning lotion with bronzer is most recommended especially for people with dark or medium complexion. These types are best for those who do not plan to swim as the substances can look streaky and may even be washed off.

Before going through with the application, exfoliating the skin should first be done. Using washcloths will often suffice for this. These need to be massaged on to skin surfaces gently and in a rotating motion. Harsh scrubbing is best avoided as this causes rashes and breakouts. Moisturizing is equally as important to prevent dry spots from soaking the excess of sun tanning lotion.

The application must be done in broad and even strokes. There are many people who will choose to make use of synthetic or natural makeup sponges for this. For back application, it may be much better to seek the help of another person. If this is not possible, natural sea sponges that are attached to handles may be used.

Other than the sun tanning lotion, it is important for people to make use of other protection for their body. Wearing of hats can help in protecting heads from the extreme heat while tanning. At times, heat can turn out really hot that they start to cause dizziness or headaches.
