Most implants today are filled with either saline or silicone. Both varieties are comprised of a hollow shell that contains a filler. The shape, thickness, and texture of the forms can vary and they may be pre-filled, or this can also be done once they are surgically inserted into the body, after which a patch will be applied to seal them. Some types are designed in a way which makes it possible to adjust the amount of filler up to six months after surgery.

Early silicone forms were found to be prone to leakage and numerous resulting health problems so they were pulled from the market in the early 1990's, however many improvements were made to them, rendering them safe and they are once again available to patients. They are a popular choice of many women because they contain a gel-like substance which gives them a more natural feel and appearance.

Saline implants are also commonly used and are preferred by some wearers because they contain a saline solution which is less toxic than silicone should it leak out. These designs also come in assorted shapes and sizes and can take on a different appearance according to the manner in which they are placed inside the body, which is either underneath the breast tissue or the underlying muscles.

Patients will undergo augmentation surgery under a general anesthetic in a hospital or outpatient surgical facility. The surgical technique used dictates the location of the scars, and in some cases the patient can choose how this will be done. Common incision sites include around the nipple, alongside the outer edges of the breasts, the armpit, and in some cases, through the navel.

Patients who opt for inflatable implants will typically have smaller incisions and more choice when it comes to the surgical technique used. Most patients can return home several hours after the procedure. It will be necessary to carefully follow the doctor's list of post-operative instructions in order to recover quickly. One must also be fully aware of the possibility, although uncommon, for certain complications to arise such as reduced sensation in the breast and nipple, impaired lactation, infection, and rupture. Implants were not designed to last forever, and will also need to be replaced after about ten years.
