What To Anticipate While Recovering From Breast Reduction Op

By Lelia Hall

Recovering from an operation requires you to follow the patient care instructions given to you by your surgeon. There should be a lot of things you have to anticipate then, especially when you are set on having breast reduction operations. Here is a general idea on what to anticipate when you are recovering from the said operation.

First, there is the issue with your drains. Drains are usually attached to you once you finish the surgery. However, this will then be removed during your first follow-up appointment with either your surgeon or post-operative care doctor. The said appointment is usually scheduled some time during the first week after surgery.

There is incision care as well. Invasive surgeries require incision. Incisions can be closed with sutures. The surgeon will have to make sure that the incisions and suture lines are dry. It is up to the surgeon to decide on the methods to use to keep these dry. You have to listen to what your surgeon tells you with regards to incision care.

Suture removal. Having the suture does not mean that you have to leave it there forever. You have to get the suture removed at an appropriate time. The doctor who is in charge of your post-operative care will be the one to check the incision sites. The said doctor is also the one who will remove the said stitches. Usually, the suture removal can be done ten days after the operation.

Your temperature must be monitored. You should have a regular schedule by which you will be monitoring your own temperature. Your temperature is important in your recovery because a slight rise in it would be a bit alarming already. When the temperature rises during recovery time, that may mean that an infection occurred.

Soreness and pain are inevitable feelings when you go through a surgery, no matter what type of surgery it is. You should not feel out of it with these feelings since they can just heal in several days. It is fine if you do not move around though. You have to bear with the soreness and pain for several days then.

Swelling. This is an expected experience when you are just finished with the operation. It is the same with any other operations out there. Normally, you will have swelling for about three to four months after the operations. However, the swelling is rarely noticed by others. In most cases, it will only be you who will notice.

You might have to experience bruising too. However, the chances of bruising is equal to the chances of not having one. You may or may not experience it. Bruising, after all, is depend on the person, how effective the administered medicine is, and techniques used for the said surgery.

Sleeping is also one of the anticipated post-operative care to remember. Once you have finished the surgery, you better sleep with two to three fluffy pillows under the upper back and head. Some people might find it comfortable sleeping in recliner chairs or wedge pillows. This is because they need to keep their torso elevated to relieve the pressure in their treatment area and reduce pain.
