This type of martial art has evolved over time in relation to the Chinese culture and development. Every variation of style and style was developed for a given reason. Training is focused on two main features tuishou and taolu. Taolu refers to solo and entails sequences of slow movements, which focus on straight spine, breathing, and natural sort of motion.

Tuishou involves training with a partner. It entails holding and pushing hands in a circular pattern. It is done in three major ranges namely, long, medium, and close. It involves a form of dance, which helps improve blood circulation. Push hand drills begin with the simplest techniques and advance to more complex methods. The drills are beneficial since they help improve sensitivity and enhance internal harmony.

Taiji has been absorbed into sports. It is a competitive game held under Wushu competitions, involving demonstration of predetermined styles within a certain duration. Participants are then judged and given points following certain rules. Tournaments may feature group, individual or dual routines. Background music is permitted in the events.

Sanda is the present day sport and combat technique, which borrows much from old Chinese boxing. It includes grappling, wrestling, and other fighting techniques. Sanda observes particular rules so as to minimize possibilities of injury amongst competitors. Dangerous self-defense styles like chokes, joint locks, and elbow strikes are disallowed. Protective gear such as gloves, cup, mouthpiece, and helmets are being incorporated slowly into the sports.
