Information On Liposuction Northwest Indiana Residents Must Know

By Jana Serrano

Liposuction (or lipoplasty) is a cosmetic surgery that is performed with the aim of getting better body contours by redistributing body fat. It may be done as a stand alone procedure or together with other similar cosmetic procedures that include among others, face lift, tummy tuck and breast reduction surgery. There are surgeons who can provide the service in Merrillville, IN 46410. Having the procedures done alongside each other generally results in better outcomes. There are important things on liposuction northwest Indiana residents may be interested in.

Since its advent in the 1960s, the procedure has undergone many modifications in a bid to refine the outcomes. Initially, surgeons adopted what is known as the tumescent technique that involved infusing fluid into the areas of interest using cannulas to cause lipolysis. Once the fat had been broken down, it was removed from the site using a high vacuum suction machine. The most preferred mode of anaesthesia at the time was local anaesthesia.

In recent modification of the practice, surgeons have adopted the use of ultrasound machines to break down fat tissues. Unlike in the past, there has been preference of general anaesthesia as opposed to local anaesthesia. Results have been variable and some surgeons have stuck with the older techniques. Generally, there has been an improvement in the outcomes and a reduction in the risks that are involved.

Preparation to undergo the procedure is mandatory. The doctor needs to know whether or not you are fit to undergo the surgery. During the preparation, one is typically taken through a clinical history and then examined. Blood tests are done to check whether you have the required haemoglobin level. It is a requirement that one is of good general health status and is above 18 years of age.

The main objective of the surgeon should be to use the right amount of fat in filling the empty pockets. If not done in the right manner, uneven mounds may appear on the areas from which fat has been planted. The surrounding structures such as blood vessels and connective tissues should be preserved as much as possible.

Areas from which fat is harvested include the abdomen, the inner thighs, cheeks, ankles and buttocks among others. You need to hold a discussion with your doctor on the areas that should be used for the exercise. Some patients may be required to undergo serial surgeries before the desired results can be achieved.

There are a number of risks that are associated with this procedure. Overzealous removal of fat interferes with body fluid balance which may lead to detrimental systemic effects on the body. Other risks that must also be discussed with your doctor include bleeding, infection, and fat embolism.

Recovery is usually rapid and one can resume their normal routines within a week. It is important to note that liposuction cannot be used as a substitute of proper diet and adequate physical exercise. Rather, it should be used to complement other weight control measures such as diet and physical exercise
