Lasers for Skin Treatment and Hair Removal

By Morgana Reichel

Hair removal and skin treatment are the two primary uses for lasers in cosmetic procedures.

Laser Hair Removal

You might be self-conscious about the way you look if you have hair in unwanted places. Laser hair removal offers an easy, long-lasting, and virtually painless way to remove unwanted hair, and keep it off.

It is a fairly straightforward process. A laser emits a high energy beam of light that is absorbed by the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed, or turned on, for only a fraction of a second, the duration of each pulse is just long enough to treat the hair follicle, and not damage the surrounding skin. The hair bulb at the base of the hair follicle is destroyed when the the laser light energy is transformed into heat and absorbed.

A pigment called melanin, which is produced by melanocytes, is found in the hair bulb and determines the colour of your hair. In laser hair removal, the target for the laser energy is this melanin pigment. Thus the more melanin an individual has in his/her hair, the more effective a laser's energy will be absorbed into the follicle and the better the results will be.

Although the treatment effectively slows hair growth, it doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal. To provide relief from unwanted hair, it typically takes several treatments. As well, periodic maintenance treatments might be needed as well.

The laser safely removes body hair without damaging the surrounding lighter skin in hair removal treatments.

Overall, it is a painless procedure. Possible symptoms, which are minor and curable, include: slight discomfort that feels like a rubber band against the skin may occur, and soreness or tenderness may accompany the healing process.

The great thing about laser hair removal is that the results are long-lasting. It may take repeated treatments to be completely rid of unwanted hairs, but once they're gone, this effect usually lasts. Don't forget it's simple to treat new hair growth.

Laser Skin Treatments

Laser skin treatments penetrate the upper layer of skin (epidermis) and target below the second layer (dermis), so are very different from hair removal. Of the many types of laser skin treatments, a popular one is laser skin resurfacing. In this procedure a laser is gently used to help remove layers of damaged skin so that healthy skin can form in its place.

Even out skin tone, and reduce signs of aging, such as highly-visible veins, wrinkles, and blotchiness via laser skin treatments.

Another type of laser skin treatment works by penetrating the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin to build healthy new tissue underneath. The tightness and elasticity that your skin once had will be repaired, in no time at all, because this healthy tissue will reduce sagging skin and wrinkles.

The laser skin treatment process is hardly ever painful. And, in most cases, the healing pain is minimal. Following the resurfacing session, your face will likely be red and a little swollen. This should subside in just a few days; You can go back to your regular life right after you leave the clinic. To achieve the desired results with laser skin treatment, it may take several procedures; you should see noticeable changes in your skin by the end of your sessions, although the results can often be subtle.
