Are Paraben Free Skin Care Products Safer

By Marcie Raymond

Parabens are a series of preservatives that are added to cosmetics to give their products a longer shelf life. There are no major cosmetic companies that make or sell paraben free skin care products. You will find that virtually every face cream, lotion, bath soap and deodorant contain parabens in at least one, but usually three or four forms.

There are several different technical names for this chemical but all finish with "ben" at the end of their names. When used in face creams whose purpose is to keep your face younger looking it has been proven to actually do the exact opposite. Parabens when exposed to ultra violet rays work to cause you to age faster. So, the ingredient that gives longer shelf life to your product works against the other ingredients designed to slow aging, canceling their effect on your skin.

In studies of tumors taken from breast cancer victims more than eighty percent of studied tumors contained parabens in their makeup. The tumors in the participants were also found to be very near the under arm area of victims. These findings have lead to the conclusion that underarm deodorants are suspect as part of the source of the chemicals found in the tumors.

Parabens work like estrogen in the body and estrogen has been shown to cause breast cancer and early onset dementia in adults. There is also proof of children entering puberty as early as eight years old. Young girls have begun developing breasts as well as pubic hair growth.

Because of this children are showing signs of early start puberty. There are cases of eight year old girls developing breasts and pubic hair and blood tests show measurable amounts of parabens are present. Unfortunately, exposure can start at birth because infant care items contain the same preservatives as adult creams and oils.

Consider that most women have been putting these creams and oils on their faces and bodies minimally twice a day for most of their lives. This number is probably much higher because soaps and make up contain them also. When using that much of a product it is to your advantage to be certain that the ingredients are safe to use. Manufacturers do not have to prove to the USDA that these preservatives are truly safe and will continue to use them until consumers force them to stop.

Manufacturers are responsible for what they put in their merchandise. So long as there is very little information and no absolute proof of the dangers of parabens there is nothing that compels them to change. There are no laws that demand that they check the safety of components in their product. What the consumer can do to change the system is refuse to purchase anything that may be hazardous to your health.

The best and nearly only place to purchase paraben free skin care products is the internet. There are several well known manufacturers listed that produce all types of creams, soaps and make up with no parabens in their ingredients. It may be wise to use the items that contain no parabens and remain on the safe side until proof one way or the other is available.
