Information On Breast Augmentation Toronto Residents Should Know

By Shawn Hunter

The field of cosmetic surgery is one that continues to evolve by the day. Breast augmentation (also known as mammoplasty) is a form of cosmetic surgery which involves making adjustments to the size of mammary glands. This is achieved by inserting a synthetic material into the soft tissues of the organ. There are a number of important facts on breast augmentation Toronto residents need to know if they are planning to undergo the procedure.

There are a number of reasons for having the surgery. Commonly, women choose to have the procedure so as to achieve more fullness and better symmetry on both sides. Persons that have just been through pregnancy or those that have had excessive weight loss may notice some asymmetry in their breasts. Small adjustments may be done to restore normalcy. Girls with developmental anomalies and persons intending to undergo sex change have also been beneficiaries.

There are two main types of implants used. Both of them are made of an outer shell of silicon rubber. To improve the implant consistency, the shell is filled with a gel or saline hence the two types. The gel implants have to be prefilled hence require larger surgical incisions for placement to take place. The disadvantage of this is that there will be a large residual scar. Saline implants are more malleable and have better cosmetic results as they allow for the use of smaller incisions.

General anaesthesia is used for the operation. The surgeon typically makes an incision on the lower aspect of the breast. Other alternative areas in which the incision can be created include the inferior areola region and through the armpit. This incision is used to create a cavity or pocket through which the implant is put in place. As soon as the implant is in position, surgical closure is done.

Bleeding and infections are the commonly reported complications but the rate at which they occur is fairly low. There have been reports in various quarters that mammoplasty is a cause of cancer. Studies have revealed that this is not true. The only cause for concern should be the fact that visualising early malignancies is a bit difficult in the presence of implants hence intervention may be delayed.

Recovery takes a few days to a couple of weeks. Many surgeons will recommend that one avoids strenuous activity as much as possible. The breast should be handled with caution for not less than a month to reduce the risk of wound breakdown. If everything is done in accordance to all the guidelines, the results will be very rewarding.

The results vary greatly between various clients. A majority of people often say that they are satisfied but there are others who may have one or two complaints. Differences in outcomes are due to a number of factors that include, among others, the type of implant used, surgical skill, age and the effect of gravity. Over time, sagging may be seen due to gravitational pull. A second operation may be needed in such a case.

Having a positive attitude is central to getting good results. Self-confidence ensures that one feels good about themselves irrespective of the outcome. This is in contrast to low self-esteem where numerous repeat procedures have to be undertaken due to the demands of an unsatisfied client.
