What You Should Know About Total Laser Resurfacing

Wrinkles are synonymous with old age. They may, however, be seen in some types of illnesses in younger people. There are many procedures that can be performed to reduce the appearance of these wrinkles and restore your former more youthful skin. Total laser resurfacing is considered one of the most effective. It is also said to have less side effects and patients tend to have a faster recovery.

This treatment is directed at the uppermost layer of the skin, the epidermis. The laser beam destroys most of the collagen tissue found in this region. As healing takes place in the subsequent weeks, new collagen fibers are synthesized resulting in tighter and smoother skin. The number and prominence of periorbital lines, perioral lines, scars and skin pigments. Therapy is individualized since the problems greatly vary from one patient to another.

Anyone can be a candidate for the procedure. There are not many known contraindications. However, it is important to note that there are a number of medications that you need to avoid in the days leading up to the procedure. These include, among others, aspirin, vitamin E and any supplements that may hinder clotting. You also need to avoid smoking for two weeks before and after the procedure.

There is usually no need for admission to a facility as the treatment can be easily carried out in an office. There is very little preparation that is required. Light topical anesthesia may or may not be required depending on the sensitivity of the affected skin. A session lasts for between 30 minutes to one hour but may be longer or shorter depending on the extent of the problem and expected results.

One session is usually sufficient for most people. Otherwise require up to 6 sessions before any changes are seen. If there is a need for additional sessions, they are usually administered six weeks apart. This give time for the collagen tissues to regenerate. The changes are usually progressive with some being seen immediately and others coming a bit later on.

Light skinned persons tend to have a residual pink or red color after the procedure. This should not be a major cause for concern as the color normalizes in two or three months for most people. It may take a little longer in those with fairer skin tones. Oil-free makeup is often used to camouflage these areas as healing takes place. For darker tones of skin, the main unwanted effect is the appearance of dark pigments. These pigments can be minimized by use of a bleaching agent.

Dressing is not usually necessary as you go home. The treated areas should be cleaned several three to four times a day. After every washing session, apply some petroleum jelly. All these are meant to prevent scab formation. Other important recovery products include a gentle cleanser, an emollient cream, a sun block and antibiotics.

Laser resurfacing has produced remarkable solutions for many skin conditions affecting a wide range of skin tones. However, it is important to remember that there is inter-individual variability in success rates even when the procedure is performed by the same professional. Ensure that you follow the instructions that are issued by your doctor and to adjust your expectations depending on your specific circumstances.
