Important Information On Liposuction Northwest Indiana Patients Should Know

By Douglas Collins

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic operations in Merrillville. Also referred to as liposculpture, the procedure entails the removed of fat cells from places in which they are not desired. This fat may be transferred to another region of the body or discarded. In a few cases, the procedure may be used to provide some therapeutic benefits. If they have intentions of undergoing liposuction northwest Indiana residents need to know a number of things beforehand.

Potential candidates need to meet certain criteria before they are allowed to have the procedure. They should ideally have tried the non-surgical options (lifestyle modification) for some time and are only turning to surgery as a last resort. The candidate should have a BMI (body mass index) of at least 40 and should be adults that can legally give consent for an operation.

When you make the decision to have the procedure, you need to discuss with the doctor about your possible options. The discussion should center on the techniques, complications and number of procedures required. A number of tests may be conducted at this point to confirm that indeed you are fit enough to undergo the procedure. You will also be advised whether you need to avoid certain drugs or foods.

In certain cases, a lower BMI may be considered. This includes cases in which the client has a weight-related complication that is worsened by excess weight. Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, gastro-esophageal reflux disease and sleep apnea are all complications (at least in part) of excess weight. For these cases, a BMI of between 35 and 39 is acceptable.

The anesthesia to be used is dependent on the size and number of areas involved. Local and regional anesthesia are used when only a few areas are to be treated. You will be awake when these types of anesthesia are used and you can go home on the same day. General anesthesia, on the other hand, is used for large areas of the skin. You will be asleep and you may take slightly longer in hospital.

During the surgery, an incision is made in the area of interest to access the underlying fat. This may be the buttocks, the tummy, the thighs or even the face. The fat is liquefied used an ultrasound probe and the suctioned using vacuum suction machines. The current trend is to use laser based techniques which are more precise and result in less bleeding.

One should be familiar with the possible complications that are associated with this procedure. Among those that are most commonly encountered are excessive blood loss, injury to nerves and other vital structures and infections. If the fat cells enter the blood stream, they may travel to organs such as the lungs and interfere with vital function. This is a life-threatening complication which is, fortunately quire rare. The presence of unsightly scars is the commonest long term complication.

Improvements will be evident in a few weeks after the operation and will continue to be seen as time progresses. It is important that you adopt a lifestyle that will help you shed off any excess weight and prevent you from gaining excess fat. The main strategies that can be adopted to make this possible are taking part in regular physical exercise and modifying your diet to include less fat and more fruits and vegetables.
