You Can Learn How To Make A Cool Bag For Your Tanning Supplies

By Haywood Hunter

When the sun comes out, you want to get out and start tanning as soon as possible. If you already have all your tanning supplies in one bag, you can just grab it and go.

Making a special bag is one way to keep all your tanning supplies together. It is also a way to save money, recycle used clothing and get a cool new bag to carry tanning supplies in without leaving the house. A one of a kind bag will also be easier to spot at the beach, lake or tanning salon.

You will need to look through your clothes and find a heavy-duty cotton tank top for this project. A heavy-duty cotton T-shirt will also work. Do not attempt to make a bag out of a shirt made from stretch material. When you place tanning supplies in the bag, the material may stretch too much. Other supplies you will need include straight pins, sewing shears and something to sew with. A sewing machine is the quickest and easiest method. If you do not have the use of one, grab a needle and some heavy-duty thread. This bag is suitable for sewers of all skill levels including beginners.

Turn the shirt inside out and pin the bottom hem together with the straight pins. Line it up as even as possible, but do not worry too much as this seam will be inside the bag. You want to finish quickly and start filling your bag with tanning supplies.

Stitch the bottom hem of the shirt closed with a seam allowance of at least one quarter of an inch. Be sure to back-stitch a few times to add strength to the seam. Double knot your thread if you are hand sewing the seam. Try to keep the stitches small and even to make the seam strong to prevent tanning supplies from tearing it. Cut some of the bottom off the shirt, or increase the seam allowance if you want a smaller bag.

Pull out the pins and turn the shirt so the right side is out. An extra step is required now if you used a T-shirt. Carefully cut the sleeves off to make your handles. Try not to cut them too thin. Heavy tanning supplies might cause thin straps to break. If you used a tank top, your handles are already formed. Consider cutting off any ribbing from around the neck to make the opening larger.

If you do not have a T-shirt or tank top at home, try the local thrift shop, Goodwill store, or visit a few neighborhood yard sales for supplies. If you are lucky you might even find a mesh tank top. This is the perfect shirt to make a beach bag out of to store tanning supplies.

Now gather all your tanning supplies and put them in your bag. Do not forget sunscreen, tanning lotion or spray, a towel, a water bottle, a good book or magazine to read, a sunhat, and some tunes. Throw in a few snacks if you want.
