Tanning without Sun using Self Tanners

By Jaime Charlies

Sunless tanning is getting a tan without the sun and still produces an effect similar in overall look to a traditional colour. This method of getting brownish naturally does not include UV exposure, which is often dangerous, and can set-off skin aging and cancer. Sunless tanning is also often non-toxic and thus, is quite benign. However, tan is short-term and will wear out or vanish within a week.

Sunless tanning items impact the Stratum Corneum, the top area part of the skin or the exterior part of the skin, while the Stratum Basale, the inner part, is suffering from tanning under the sun. There is a wide range of sunless tanning items available on the market, such as tanning tablets, sunless or self-tanners and bronzers, available by means of ointments, lotions, mousses, fumigations and baby wipes. You can find a lot of these items by looking for self tans or sunless tanning items online. These items can be used in-house, or expertly in health spas, professional hair beauty parlors, and other health facilities. If implementing inhouse remember that one must be prepared. Sometimes this means cutting hair, so that your skin can process the items best.

Many sunless tanning and aesthetic product producers use a component known as dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a clear glucose that communicates with the deceased tissues in the stratum corneum of the skin, as a component. This modification happens when dihydroxyacetone makes a response with layers in the deceased part of the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology indicates that sunless tanning items that contain DHA are the most effective in developing a long-lasting tan. See a list of airbrush tanning tips.

Erythrulose, a keto-sugar which reacts with the the keratin aminoacids on the exterior or dead parts of the skin, is also often mixed with DHA to make a long-lasting self tan. However, Erythrulose, like DHA, may cause contact dermatitis, a skin pain identified by red, flaky skin, sometimes with smashes or small blisters.

Other types of sunless tanning items such as tanning lotions, lotions or tablets usually contain the aminoacids - Tyrosine. It is considered that Tyrosine helps in the creation and regrowth of melanin (Melanin is a color and the main determinant of shade in human skin). This, if true, influences and boosts the tanning process so that's why many sunless tanning items are known as tanning accelerators.

Tanning pills also belong to the category of sunless tanning products, and often contain the chemical - Canthaxanthin. The chemical works by depositing and spreading itself all over the body, including in the skin after it's consumed, taking on an orange-brown color. Canthaxanthin is basically a coloring agent used in foods so the FDA does not approve its use a tanning agent. However, many cosmetic companies continue to use it in large quantities as an active agent in tanning products. It has also been established that continual use of canthaxanthin can cause hepatitis and canthaxanthin retinopathy.

One of the recent additions to sunless tanning remedies is Melanotan, a melanocyte (cells located in the bottom layer of the skin's epidermis) - stimulating hormone. Melanotan works by inducing skin pigment. Although extensively tested in countries like Australia, it has to be yet approved for clinical trials in the USA.
