How Fishing Lights Are Used

By Casandra Newton

Fishermen make use of fishing lights to attract shrimps, insects, fish and other members of this food chain to a specific area where they are harvested. The light attractor is attached to a structure on the boat such that it is either below the water or slightly above it. The light attracts the fish because of the color.

Small fish and other organisms flock where there is plenty of plankton in the water. Bigger fish that feed on the small fish are also likely to be found in the same location because they also find it conducive. Fishermen find such areas where they can find fish in large numbers.

Scientific research has proven that the eyes of fish are very sensitive to green and blue colors. This fact has been attributed to the fact that these animals spend their life in water which tends to be greenish or bluish in color. When the water has small matter which is particulate in nature light in the blue region of the spectrum is scattered. Water with plants and nutrients scatters green color. This is because photosynthetic microorganism and plants absorbs the red color in the spectrum and what is left is mostly green.

While most people may be aware that fish and other water animals are attracted to light few know the best color for this purpose. Biologists explain that the visual receptors of fish and other water animals are most attracted to blue and green colors. This is why fishing lights are designed to use these colors.

Many other colors such as yellow can be used but they should be of very high intensity. White light is also good because it has green and blue energy portions in it. A high intensity ensures that fish can see the light from miles away. Other features of good attractors include being submersible and portability as well.

There are two types of fishing lights. There are those that are portable and those that are permanent. Those are portable use power from batteries. This translates to light of low intensity and it also shines for a short time. The most common portable light is a 12 volt incandescent headlight but a fluorescent lamp is more efficient.

Permanent attractors use 115 volts and they are usually mounted on poles. It is common practice for permanent light attractors to be operated for several nights. This attracts big fish because they take a considerable amount of time to notice an increased concentration of fish in a region. After the animals have gotten used to seeing the light every evening they make it a habit to return to this area every day and they can be harvested easily and it large numbers.

Most of the light from attractors gets reflected back in the air by the water surface. To reduce this aluminum reflectors are used to direct the light back into the water. You can also use submersible fishing lights which shine twice as much under the water surface. You should be careful to avoid a shock.
