Have Beautiful, Youthful Hands

By Tanja M. Norla

While we all take great care of the skin on our face, what do we do for our hands? It's easy to forget that your hands are actually exposed to the elements as much as your face - even more so, in fact, because your hands are a part of nearly every activity throughout the day.

What's more, the skin on your hands is thin and doesn't have many oil glands, which makes it more vulnerable to damage.

Here are a few tips to keep your hands beautiful and healthy!

Exfoliate regularly to keep your hands looking fresh and glowing. A gentle face scrub is often better than a rougher one for the body. After each treatment, be sure to hydrate your skin with an emollient cream - one that gets into the spaces between outer skin cells to replace lost oils.

Pamper your hands at night, too. Bedtime is the best time to apply a dense, oil-based hand cream and then put on cotton gloves. Your hands will absorb the thick, long-lasting cream while you dream.

Wear gloves. Gloves will keep your hands shielded from the cold, but also from harsh elements like wind and sun. Gloves for work in the yard or garden are important, too. For indoor work, like cleaning or doing dishes, use long rubber gloves to protect your hands from harsh chemicals.

Be sure to moisturize each time you wash your hands. Washing your hands too often will dry the skin, particularly if you have antibacterial soap. For daily application, a fast-absorbing lotion is ideal, and it will fortify the moisture barrier of your skin. If you do particularly demanding work with your hands, like cleaning, you can apply an oil-based heavy cream before bed and in the morning.

As you get older, your skin gets damaged, and your hands age too. Apply SPF 15 sunblock (or higher) to help prevent age spots.

Your Hands Tell Your Age

If you want to know how old someone is, then don't look to his or her face for information. It is easy for people to look younger than they are, with all the cosmetic advancements of late.

However, a place that is more difficult to treat, and very telling of age, is the hand.

The hands change as we get older. The skins loosens and thins. Wrinkles start to appear, and age spots surface. Fortunately, the cosmetics industry has begun to change the way that hands are addressed.

The use of fillers has been reported to drastically improve the look of hands, as it plumps and tightens the skin. The skin's surface becomes smoother and the wrinkles disappear.

When we age, large tendons and veins stand out more. Fillers fix this by improving the shape of the skin. It takes less than half an hour to do this procedure and the results are immediate, lasting as long as they would in facial application.

Moreover, new technology allows us to even skin tones and disappear age spots, that are often caused by too much sun. A lot of the treatments originally used on facial skin are being adpated for use on the hands.
