How To Get Great Results Using Self Tanning Foams

By Haywood Raptis

Thanks to the fact that sunbathing is finally becoming unpopular, more people turn to self tanning products. They are safe to use, they provide great summer glow and everyone looks so much better, thinner and healthier. Self tanning products include foams, creams and lotions, and all the good ones have the same characteristic. They all contain a sugar-based component called DHA.

DHA reacts with different amino acids in the most outer skin layer, creating the effect similar to natural bronzing. The final intensity of your color depends on the percentage of DHA used in this particular product. Besides DHA, every good self tanning lotion contains various color enhancers, moisturizers and some other additives.

Every skin will appreciate a little golden glow. All year round, you can significantly improve your appearance using just a shade or two darker tanners. Summer requires more intensive nuances, and some self tanning lotions and foams can really create amazingly deep shades. Here are a few simple advices for using self tanning products.

Pull your hair up before starting with the application. It is important to exfoliate the face first, to remove all those dead skin cells. Make a mixture of a few drops of selected self tanning lotion and a little bit of your favorite face moisturizer. Apply it on your face and neck first, and then to your ears. Make sure not to miss the spot.

There is a clever little trick for achieving very nice results. Apply a small amount of some eye cream under your eyes before applying your self tanning lotion. This way these areas will remain a little lighter, and it will make you appear younger. After your tan sets, you can add some bronzer to your nose, forehead and cheeks.

Vaseline will protect your nails and cuticles from stains. Stains on your nails can be removed by nail polish remover, but toothpaste can also be helpful. If nothing else help, try soaking your fingers in your denture cleaner. It is usually very effective.

You have to exfoliate your entire body before starting applying a self tanning lotion. Pay special attention to heels, knees and elbows. If you need to shave, do it at least a day before the treatment. For sensitive skin, it's better to use good baby oil instead of your usual shaving cream. It will soften your skin and make it especially smooth.

Good moisturizing is always advisable, especially if your skin is sensitive and dry. It is also highly advisable to wear gloves when applying self tanning lotions. If you forget to put them on, here are some things that may help removing the color from your palms. Blend a spoon or two of honey with some iced sugar, salt or baking soda, and rub them with this mixture. It works great on eventual streaks as well.

Professional self tanning salons provide the best service. It might be a little expensive to be air-sprayed by a technician, but you will be more than satisfied with the result. Cheaper option is to use a tanning booth. In both cases the color will be streak-free and even. Your color will probably last about one week or so, and you have to apply another layer when it begins to fade.
