Dental x rays are divided into two major categories. The first category of x rays is used inside the mouth while the other category is utilized on the outer part of the mouth. Intra-oral dental x ray is popular with dentists because it provides a lot of details and this helps them to inspect the roots and the bones that are located around the teeth as well as find cavities.

Extra-oral x rays are also able to view teeth but they are designed for the skull and jaw specifically. They lack detail and because of this they cannot be used to detect cavities or identify problems on the teeth. Instead they are utilized in monitoring development and growth of the jawbone compared to teeth. They are used to locate problems between jaws and teeth.

There are different kinds of intra-oral rays. Every type shows a different aspect of teeth. One type is the Bite-wing which shows information of the lower and upper teeth in the mouth. A bite wing is used to show a tooth starting from the position of the crown to the bone that supports it. Such rays are utilized to identify decay in teeth as well as difference in the density of the bones due to disease of the gum. They are utilized in cast restoration as well.

Another category is periapical rays which are able to view the whole tooth. These rays are used to locate problems of the root and bone structure. The final category of intra-oral x-rays is Occlusal. These rays are used view development and placement of a full tooth.

Extra-oral x-rays are also divided into several types. The first type is called panoramic and it shows the whole region around the mouth. This kind of x ray is utilized in detecting the location of the emerging teeth and also those that are already fully emerged. The second type is referred to as Tomograms. They are used to observe structures which are not easily visible because they show only the desired layer of the mouth.

The third type is Cephalometric projections, This type is used to look at the teeth and jaws as related to the profile of a person. Orthodontists utilize this kind of rays to make plans for treatment. Sialography is another kind of extra-oral rays and it is useful in viewing salivary glands.

The final category of extra-oral x rays that are used in dental x ray is called CT scanning. This type of rays provide a three dimensional picture of the body. They are used in hospitals to locate problems on the bones found on the face.
