A Simple Guide To Sunless Tanning

By Haywood Hunter

It is often said that sitting out in the sun to get a tan can cause skin cancer. Yet, many people would still want to have the perfectly tanned body because it makes their skin glow. What, then, could be a good substitute for natural tan from the sun that could expose you to harmful UV rays? How about trying sunless tanning? People doing this are increasing everyday because this is a safer way to get the perfect tan.

What's great about sunless tanning is this can be done on your own, by simply buying products that can help you achieve the perfect time. You don't have to wait for summer to get a tan, you can have one anytime of the year! Many of these products are found as lotions, creams and gels.

These sunless tanning products usually contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which was approved by the FDA for safe use in the early 70s. DHA is a chemical substance that reacts with the outer layer of the skin, giving it a darker shade. It only stays in the top skin layer and does not get into the bloodstream.

The color from these sunless tanning products stay for at least 7 days and does not easily wash off with water. Even if the initial tan wears off, you can always reapply the product on your skin. It only gets removed as the skin cells regenerate and dead skin cells are removed.

To choose the right shade for you skin tone and to make sure that you are not allergic to the sunless tanning lotion, apply a small amount on your skin first. Wait for about a day before applying the product all over your body.

Certainly, there are now many sunless tanning products in the market, but not all of them are safe for use. Check those that have UV protection, as they are the best ones to use. These sunless tanning formulations can also protect you from the harsh effects of the sun. Remember that UV rays can do harm on your skin if you get exposed to them for a long time.

If you would want to apply the lotion on your own, exfoliate and shave first to get rid of dead skin cells. Use gloves during application and apply with a sponge or a brush for an even tone. Before using the sunless tanning product, read the labels properly and follow the instructions.

Another way to get that super glow bronze look is by spray tanning. This sunless tanning method is a safe way to achieve a tan, and it is done inside either a booth or a bed in a salon. Those with fair skin and burn easily usually find out that this form of getting a tan is the one that fits them well.

To keep the tan lasting longer, do not take a shower immediately after the application. Stay away from very inexpensive sunless tanning products that may cause you more harm than good. Instead, use products that carry named brands to be assured of high quality and safety.
