One of the most common ingredients in lotions and some creams is dihydroxyacetone, or as it is known, DHA. This substance will only affect the surface layer of the epidermis. One can use it by spraying it or rubbing it on the body.

Dihydroxyacetone is also called DHA. When the lotion is applied it will interact with the dead cells of the dermis to become darker than normal. Since these cells are no longer alive they will fall off fairly quickly when one showers or goes swimming. This makes it so a person has to reapply the lotion on a regular basis to keep their appearance.

Amino acids can be used to change the tone of epidermis. These can either come in pill form or applied directly onto the dermis using a lotion or cream. These are referred to as tanning accelerators and help the body produce larger amounts of melanin. Melanin is the substance that gives a person the color of their skin.
