The Basics Of Stress And Acne

By Jon Chamberlain

As some of you are aware, there is a strong correlation between your mind and your physical body. In fact there are known physical medical conditions caused by psychological issues alone.

Likewise, research has also discovered a direct link between a person's state of mind and their pimples from acne. The higher the anxiety they have, the greater chance these people will get cystic acne. Obviously this is dependent on the person, but in general, individuals who are more prone to acne will quickly see this connection.

Personally, the worst cystic acne I managed to get was when I was really stressed. However, having pimples made me a lot more anxious and then this extra stress made my acne a lot worse. This "Catch-22" may then be hard to break free from.

Scientifically, experts can't explain exactly how stress causes cystic acne. However, they believe that stress no longer inhibits the cells that produce sebum. In other words, there is nothing to control sebum production when you are stressed. This then means that your pores get clogged. Acne bacteria then moves in and feeds off the sebum. When bacteria multiplies and attacks the body, a response is triggered which causes the acne.

In this situation, it therefore makes sense to relieve your stress in some way. Here are some things you can try.

Meditating - this is a great way to relax your body and mind

Physical exercise - this releases chemicals in your body that makes you feel good

Sex - enough said!

Social gatherings - venturing out and interacting with friends is often a fun way to de-stress

Play games - either sports or computer games

Laughter - watch a funny tv show or go to a comedy club

Try to avoid being alone with just your thoughts when you are stressed. Being around people automatically puts you in a better mood. If you can't be with people, do something to keep your mind and body busy.

Following these tips on stress relief may help in your cystic acne breakouts. The state of your mind is a powerful thing that has full control of your body so if you do suffer from breakouts regardless of whether it is caused by stress, ensure any bad thoughts about your acne is treated as part of any cystic acne treatment.
