Getting Past the Obstacles to Better Fitness

By Ramon Christopher

Many people have a goal of improving their fitness level, but something always seems to get in the way. Excuses like having no time, physical limitations, and lack of motivation are easy to find when it comes to avoiding an exercise routine. To get past the obstacles to getting healthy, use the following ideas.

For some people, the weather is one of the obstacles they will face. Severe winter weather can make it impossible to either exercise outside or to even drive to the gym. By spring, you've either forgotten about or given up on your exercise program. A simple solution to this obstacle is to have exercises you can do at home.

You may prefer exercising outside or at the gym but it's not always practical to go out so it's good to have a routine you can do at home. This can be using weights, an exercise machine, or a mat for calisthenics, yoga, or push-ups. Is your difficulty participating in a fitness program due to an illness, injury, or some other long term health challenge? There may be able to find a way around any physical limitations because of the variety in kinds of exercises available. If you have limited to no use of your legs, for example, you can work out your upper body.

People with heart conditions can do gentle exercises in water if they can't do strenuous workouts. Talk to your doctor and a fitness trainer to get help building a fitness routine around your specific needs. Everyone's fitness journey will include some setbacks. Possible setbacks include an injury, a time of low motivation, or a personal problem that prevents you from exercising for awhile. The important thing is to recognize that everyone has such periods, and not to let them become excuses to stop doing exercise bike workouts. Taking a break when you need to isn't the end but be sure to begin again when you can. If you have to start over from the beginning, that's still better than giving up on your fitness routine. Obstacles are a normal part of life so doesn't let them keep you from reaching your fitness goals.

Patience and discipline are the keys to getting the desired results from any fitness routine. Many people start feeling better soon after they begin a fitness routine even though it takes time for them to reach their goals. No matter how long it takes to reach your goals, always giving your best will net you the best results. The above tips on overcoming barriers to fitness can help motivate you to start and stick with your own exercise program.
