How the Hot Stone Massage Can Help You

By Kendra McCormick

Are you aware of the therapy that involves hot stones being placed over your body? Chances are high that you have been made aware of this type of massage by now. This therapy is gaining a lot of attention and adherents of late, you see.

The Native Americans are claimed to have been the originators of this intriguing use of hot stones. Today's version of that tradition was developed by Mary Nelson of LaStone Therapy fame. People submitting to this type of massage now get not only heated basaltic stones for their therapy but also things like warm towels and scented oils for the ultimate soothing experience.

Most therapists will warm up the rocks to the prescribed heat. Afterwards, the therapist will place the stones on the client's body. On occasion the contact can be fleeting, similar to a rub with the stone, but at other times it shall be sustained.

Clearly, it is the heat that helps in this case. Most therapies for muscular pain depend on the application of warmth, after all. That should already hint at the reason behind warm stone massage's efficacy.

As an example, consider that your masseur would be able to employ a less-heavy hand than usual. This is due to the stones warming up your muscles ahead of time. This is perfect when you want a lighter but still tension-releasing touch for your hot stone massage session.

That said, there are some things to be wary of when thinking of trying this therapy too. Note, for instance, that this is a technique that costs a lot to have performed on you. That said, you do have to remember too that the expense is merited.

This is a unique sort of treatment that not everyone can pull off. People administering this actually have to be trained specifically for it. This explains why you need to pay a little more already.

Naturally, better-trained therapists will give you a better experience. And with someone who has not been trained at all, the experience will likely be terrible. Obviously, it would be better to spring for the more expensive, trained option.

Aside from that, it would be a bad idea to go to a cheap spa in the first place. Remember that the stones are used again and again. Even if the spas all say their stones are thoroughly cleaned, the chances of them being more thoroughly cleaned are higher at the more expensive spas.

The main thing is that you never forget that you should have control over the experience, from the heat of the massage stones to their placement. Just as an example, some customers tell their therapists ahead of time about parts of their bodies that they don't like to have touched by the hot stones. They should be only too glad to accommodate you.
