How To Cope When Your Stress Is Out Of Control

By Johnathan Black

Living with stress is not something that is foreign to most adults. Handling stress is something that is learned, and it only becomes a problem when it begins taking over your life. Then it is up to you to learn new coping mechanisms to calm yourself down. Here are a few examples.

Don't be tempted to use drugs, legal or otherwise. While it may seem the most natural thing in the world to turn to alcohol, cigarettes, or other drugs to reduce our stress levels, the truth of the matter is that these drugs only escalate our problems. They actually result in heightened stress levels, not reduced stress. We become over-sensitized to the very things that are causing our stress in the first place.

Breathe deeply from your abdomen. This gets more oxygen to your brain, so that you feel relief from stress quickly. Many adults breathe from their chests, which causes shallow breathing that almost invites stress. Place your hand over your navel and visualize breathing from there and watch how much more relaxed you feel.

You can reduce your stress and anxiety, by simply organizing your home and office. Place everything in a designated place and label it, so that you will be able to find things when you are looking for them. This is a great way to keep your life in order and lessen your stress and anxiety.

If a lot of your troubles arise from being late in the morning, set your clock to wake up fifteen minutes earlier than you would. This will not make much of a difference in your sleep but can help tremendously in arriving to work on time and reducing your stress level.

A great way to reduce stress is not to sweat the small stuff. You have probably heard that before many times, because it is true. People with high stress levels tend to get upset about trivial things more often than people with low stress levels. Sometimes it is best to step away from a situation and think about whether it is worth getting upset over.
